Pour Lotus, l'année 1962 fut sans doute la plus importante de l'histoire de l'entreprise.
En peu de temps, ils lancèrent la révolutionnaire 25 Grand Prix, première véritable monocoque et la révolutionnaire 26 ou 'Elan', une voiture de route tout aussi révolutionnaire. Si la 25 a permis à l'entreprise britannique de remporter ses premiers championnats de Formule 1, l'Elan a confirmé le sérieux de la petite firme comme constructeur de voiture de sport. On pouvait pardonner au fondateur de Lotus, Colin Chapman, de ne pas avoir construit une version compétition de l'Elan. Cela n'a cependant pas empêché ses clients de prendre la piste avec leurs autos de série.
Premières modifications
Bien que la voiture de série possédait une fabuleuse tenue de route et un poids plume, elle a dû être préparée pour la piste. Des équipes privées comme « Walker Racing » et « Chequered Flag » ont relevé le défi et apporté diverses modifications à la direction et au freinage. Chapman a suivi les efforts privés avec beaucoup d'intérêt et a même permis à ses pilotes d'usine de participer. Les saisons 1963 et 1964 ont connu un succès considérable et les autos furent pilotées par de grands pilotes comme Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart et Sir John Whitmore. En homme d'affaires avisé, Chapman a rapidement pris conscience qu'il y avait un marché pour une version « course » de la Lotus Elan construite par l'usine.
Notre très belle Elan aux spécifications FIA 26R a été préparée sur la base d’une version S2 de 1965. Elle a fait l'objet de profonds travaux dans sa conception et préparation pour arriver à un résultat hors du commun. L’important dossiers de factures, la multitude de photos et la richesse des notes et de l’expérience du pilote et du préparateur attestent d’une voiture pour laquelle aucune dépense n’a été épargnée. Tout juste rodée elle est la promesse pour le futur acheteur d’une auto extrêmement compétitive et soignée.
Les nombreux amateurs qui nous lisent, auront tout de suite reconnu cette Lotus Elan dans sa livrée si particulière qui fit le bonheur de Jean-Pierre Lajournade avec succès pendant de nombreuses années.
L'auto fut acquise par Jean Pierre LAJOURNADE, propriétaire actuel en 2005, auprès de Tony THOMPSON. Préparée par une équipe de mécanicien renommés dont des anciens de Renault F1 cette voiture est conforme à l'annexe K du règlement technique FIA, et dispose des accessoires obligatoires tel que l'arceau, baquets, harnais, système anti-incendie, réservoir d'essence spécifique... Bien entendu, elle est accompagnée d'un Passeport Technique Historique en règle validé en 2022.
Parmi ses nombreux faits de course, notre Elan a participé à de nombreux Tour Auto, qu’elle a gagné au Scratch en 2010.
Un important dossier de factures accompagne la voiture. Reprenant l’ensemble des travaux et des fournisseurs, depuis l'achat par son propriétaire. Inutile de rappeler les performances et l'agilité de cette voiture qui s'imposa au classement général en spéciale à maintes reprises au Tour Auto face à des autos plus puissantes. Fin 2012 Le propriétaire s’en sépare, son nouveau propriétaire, n'effectuera que quelques tours de roues avant de la céder à un Italien avec qui elle prendra plusieurs départ de courses dont notamment le Modena Cento Oro.
En 2018, elle est rachetée par Jean Pierre qui loue la voiture pour le Tour Auto 2019.
Hélas un accident en spéciale ne lui permettra pas de voir l’arrivée.
Jean Pierre entreprend alors une reconstruction totale de sa voiture historique; châssis, coque, sécurité, moteur, boite, train roulant….Tout est remplacé.
Il s'agit d'une auto 'neuve' maintenue à un très haut niveau de préparation tant technique qu’esthétique.

For Lotus, 1962 was arguably the most important year in the company's history. In a short space of time, they launched the revolutionary 25 Grand Prix, the first true monocoque, and the revolutionary 26 or 'Elan', an equally revolutionary road car. If the 25 won the British company its first Formula One championships, the Elan confirmed the small firm's seriousness as a sports car manufacturer. Lotus founder Colin Chapman could be forgiven for not building a competition version of the Elan. However, this did not stop his customers from taking their production cars to the track.
First modifications
Although the production car had fabulous handling and low weight, it had to be prepared for the track. Private teams such as Walker Racing and Chequered Flag took up the challenge and made various modifications to the steering and braking. Chapman followed the private efforts with great interest and even allowed his factory drivers to participate. The 1963 and 1964 seasons were very successful, and the cars were driven by the likes of Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart and Sir John Whitmore. As a businessman, Chapman quickly realised that there was a market for a factory-built racing version of the Lotus Elan.
Elan 26R
Chapman retained all the modifications made by his customers. In addition, the suspension was extensively modified with larger anti-roll bars and adjustable racing booms. The fibreglass body wheel arches were widened to make room for larger wheels and tyres. The Lotus four-cylinder DOHC engine was offered with a Cosworth or BRM tuning package. Interestingly, customers later discovered that the engine worked best with a Cosworth block and a BRM cylinder head. Dubbed the 'Elan 26R', the competition car was offered with a Roadster body, roll bar and separate hardtop. Although no two cars were identical, most 26Rs were fitted with streamlined headlights and four-spoke wheels.
Our beautiful FIA 26R specification Elan was prepared based on a 1965 S2 version. It has undergone extensive work in its construction and preparation to achieve an outstanding result. The large file of invoices, the multitude of photos and the wealth of notes and experience of the driver and the mechanic attest to a car for which no expense has been spared. Just broken in, it is the promise for the future buyer of an extremely competitive and well cared for car.
The many enthusiasts who read this article will have immediately recognized this Lotus Elan in its very special livery which made Jean-Pierre Lajournade happy and successful for many years.
The car was acquired by Jean Pierre LAJOURNADE, current owner in 2005, from Tony THOMPSON. Prepared by a team of renowned mechanics, including former Renault F1 engineers, this car complies with the appendix K of the FIA technical regulations, and is equipped with the mandatory accessories such as roll bar, buckets, harnesses, firefighting system, specific fuel tank... Of course, it is sold with a valid Historic Technical Passport from 2022.
Among its many racing achievements, our Elan has participated in many Tour Auto, which it won overall in 2010.
An important file of invoices accompanies the car. Including all the work and suppliers, since the purchase by its owner. No need to recall the performance and agility of this car which won the general classification in special stages many times in the Tour Auto against more powerful cars. At the end of 2012 the owner sells the car, but its new owner, will make only a few laps before selling it to an Italian with whom it will take several departure of races including the Modena Cento Ore.
In 2018, it is bought by Jean Pierre who rents the car for the Tour Auto 2019.
Unfortunately, an accident in a special stage will not allow him to see the finish.
Jean Pierre then undertakes a total reconstruction of his historic car; chassis, body, safety, engine, gearbox, running gear.... Everything is replaced.
It is a 'new' car maintained at a very high level of technical and aesthetic preparation.
